Choose a document-grounded AI tool
Use a service that lets you upload or connect the document and ask questions about the supplied material. NotebookLM and several general AI assistants support document workflows, although limits vary.
Use a structured prompt
Ask for the main argument, key facts, definitions, unresolved questions and page references where available instead of simply asking for a short summary.
Summarize long PDFs in sections
For a long PDF, work chapter by chapter. Then ask the AI to create a final synthesis from the section summaries.
Verify important claims
AI summaries can omit qualifications or misunderstand tables. Check statistics, names, dates, formulas and quotations against the original file before using them.
A useful prompt
Summarize this document using only information contained in the file. Give me the main points, key evidence, important definitions and questions I should review. Identify the relevant page or section when possible. Do not invent information that is not in the document.
For students
After the summary, ask for flashcards, practice questions and a quiz. Answer the questions yourself before checking the explanations.
For work
Ask for action items, deadlines, decisions, risks and unanswered questions. Keep the original file available so you can audit the result.
